Australian Senate Bans Online Poker

The Australian Senate voted to ban online poker this week.  The bill moves to the House of Representatives where it is expected to pass.  The move would amend existing online gambling regulations to outlaw all forms of online poker no matter where the site is actually operated.  Current law only forbids companies located within Australia from offering online poker.  888 left the Australian market earlier this year in anticipation of the move.  Other companies are waiting until the bill becomes law.

A ban on live sports wagering is included in this bill.  The belief is that the this type of action may affect the outcome of games.  Live betting is currently legal over the phone.
